Bald and bold, as Saddiq takes on RM1mil Ironman challenge

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman

PETALING JAYA: Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has a million reason to push beyond limit at this year Ironman Malaysia in Langkawi on Nov 1 (Saturday).

The former Youth and Sports Minister, who has shaved his head bald for the race, is gearing up for the gruelling challenge, where he must swim 3.8km, cycle 180km and run 42.2km - all in under 13 hours - to unlock a RM1mil donation for Muar from local fashion brand Prima Valet (PV).

After conquering his maiden Ironman Malaysia last year despite a mid-race crash, Syed Saddiq hopes to race smarter and stronger as Ironman Malaysia celebrates its 10th anniversary.

"Last year was about surviving - this year, it’s about thriving," said Syed Saddiq, who clocked 13 hours and 13 minutes last year, earning praise for his perseverance.

"The biggest lesson I learnt was that the real Ironman is the hundreds of hours of training before race day. The event itself is where we celebrate that effort."

He added that the journey has taught him discipline and resilience, and encouraged more Malaysians to take up triathlon.

"It’s not a race for elites. With consistency and the right mindset, anyone can finish within 17 hours. It pushes your mind and body to the limit — and builds the best version of yourself."

Since its return to Langkawi in 2014, Ironman has inspired thousands to embrace endurance sport and transformed the island into a sports tourism hub.

"I would highly recommend many of the Malaysians to pick up triathlons, because it really builds in discipline, good character, and really pushes your mind and physique to the maximum, which will really make you a much better person.

"It's really about building the best version of yourself," said Syed Saddiq.
