PETALING JAYA: National triple jumper Nurul Ashikin Abas got her season off to a good start when she soared to a gold in the Hong Kong Championships.

The 24-year-old Nurul, who took the top spot with a leap of 12.97m at the Wan Chai Sports Ground yesterday, said she was on the right track for the Asian Track and Field Championships in Gumi, South Korea, from May 27-31.

“I’m glad to start the season with a gold, and it will be a benchmark for better jumps in the future. This is the start I wanted for 2025,” she said.

“This gives me the positive spirit and belief to be consistent in South Korea.

“My coach (Mohd Firdaus Salim) will go through my routine, jumps and decide what are needed further in training to improve myself.”

Malaysia also won their second gold in the tournament through Riess William Ling Eng Meng in the men’s discus event when he dominated the field with a winning effort of 48.63m.

In the men’s triple jump, Andre Anura Anuar added to Malaysia’s medal haul by claiming bronze with a jump of 15.48m.

Malaysia also found success in the women’s hammer throw, where seasoned campaigner Grace Wong Xiu Mei clinched silver with 57.99m.

Meanwhile, Nani Sahirah Maryata delivered a bronze medal in the women’s shot put, registering a distance of 13.89m to round off a fruitful outing for the national team.
