Sprinter Azeem narrowly misses national 200m record at Florida Relays

PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi came close to breaking the national 200m record in his first outdoor competition this season.

The 20-year-old representing Auburn University, clocked an impressive time of 20.79s to top Heat 6 at the Pepsi Florida Relays in Gainesville, ahead of North Carolina A&T’s Nakhi Benjamin (20.90s) and Texas A&M’s Ernest Campbell (21.08) on Friday (April 4).

Azeem’s time was just 0.02s shy of the national 200m record of 20.77s set by Russel Alexander Nasir Taib at the Queensland Track Classic in 2019.

However, Azeem’s time was only enough to see him finish in 13th in the final as collegemate Dario Matau won with 20.49s, followed by North Carolina A&T’s Jordan Ware (20.51s) and South Florida’s Nathan Metelus (20.60s).
