Azeem rewrites indoor 60m national record


Record-breaker: Mohd Azeem Fahmi clocked 6.63s in the first round of the 60m indoor race to break Watson Nyambek’s record of 6.66s at the World Championships in 1999.

PETALING JAYA: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi broke his own 60m national record by clocking 6.62s to finish fifth in the final of the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson University in South Carolina on Saturday (Feb 11).

Trayvon Bromell finished first with a time of 6.42s, while Marcellus Moore took second with 6.52s. Sterling Warner-Savage completed the podium by finishing third with a time of 6.59s.

On Jan 28, the 18-year-old Auburn University athlete clocked 6.63s in the first round of the Texas Tech Open and Multis at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas.

In that meet, the Perak boy broke Watson Nyambek’s record of 6.66s at the World Championships in 1999.

Azeem also holds the national 100m record when he made an impact at the Under-20 World Championships in Cali, Colombia last year, by running a superb 10.09s.
