Azeem misses out on the 200m final

PETALING JAYA: Mohd Azeem Fahmi's hopes of making a second final appearance ended after he clocked 20.97s in the 200m semi-finals at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.

The 18-year-old's effort put him 15th in the semi-final field of 24 sprinters.

Israel's Blessing Akawasi Afrifah was fastest in 20.17s ahead of Botswana's Letsile Tebogo, who clocked 20.23s.

The Botswana runner, who broke the 100m world junior record on Monday by posting 9.91s, was the fastest in the heats earlier when he romped to a new meet record of 19.99s.

Azeem ran a faster time in the heats. He clocked 20.83s to win his preliminary heat to advance to the semi-finals as the ninth fastest time.

His personal best was just 0.06 second off the national 200m record of 20.77s set by Russel Alexander Nasir Taib in 2019.

Azeem set a new national record of 10.09s in the 100m earlier.
