Hup Wei takes gold at NSW Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Australia continues to be a good hunting ground for national high jumper Lee Hup Wei (pic).

The 30-year-old Selangor athlete soared to his second gold medal in the New South Wales Open Athletics Championships in Sydney yesterday.

Hup Wei and teammate Nauraj Singh Randhawa both cleared 2.24m but Hup Wei was awarded the gold on count back.

His effort was four centimetres short of his personal best of 2.28m, his gold-medal winning mark at the ACT Championships in Canberra last month.

Nine athletes took part in the men’s high jump and Brandon Starc of Australia bagged the bronze with 2.20m.

Hup Wei said he was satisfied with his performance although he failed to clear 2.28m in three attempts.

“This is my best outing in Australia as I won two golds in two competitions. I hope to get selected for the Commonwealth Games (in Gold Coast from April 4-15) based on my performance in Australia,” said Hup Wei.
