PARTIES who express concern over the appointment of YB Hannah Yeoh as Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) must ultimately judge her based on her performance, not perception. Never judge a book by its cover.
Yeoh should be given the space to carry out her responsibilities and to fulfil commitments, pledges and promises made both by herself and her political party.
Therefore, the Minister must immediately take this opportunity to ensure the implementation of
a) local government elections: and
b) the advancement of sustainable and people-centred urban development.
Also, as a Minister within the Prime Minister’s Department, it is now the best opportunity for Yeoh who has previously pledged support for the separation of powers to ensure that the Prime Minister does not concurrently hold the position of Finance Minister.
Malaysians require Ministers who are serious about reform and not merely making political statements. Credibility is built through keeping promises.
Every Malaysian citizen deserves leaders who are competent, trustworthy and results-driven. After all they are paid by the people.
The best way forward is to allow performance, policy outcomes and adherence to promises to be the true measure of statesmanship.
