EARLY this month, seven diners at a restaurant in Langkawi were shocked by the RM1,196.80 price they had to pay for a siakap dish. When they shared their experience on social media, consumer groups and even the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry (KPDNHEP) were quick to comment that they should have checked the price before confirming their order.
Enforcement officers from the ministry who investigated the matter under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723) decided that no offence had taken place, and no advice was given on what remedial action the diners could take.
