Running leads to a healthier lifestyle

Almost every weekend, running events are organised around the country.

Thousands join long-distance runs, especially half marathon. This is a positive sign that Malaysia is becoming a sporting nation.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin defined a sporting nation as one that encourages its people to actively participate in sports, instead of just watching.

Malaysians are now concerned about their health following a rise in the number of chronic diseases. We are encouraged to walk at least 10,000 steps a day in order to stay healthy and running can lead to a healthy life.

As a half-marathon runner, running 5km at KLCC Park is my daily routine. A regular training is vital to increase our endurance and sharpen the mental strength.

Besides physical fitness, a runner needs to have a positive mindset to drive his internal strengths to finish the run.

Last month, I joined Hari Sukan Negara 21km run in KL and witnessed a lady in her 60s competing in the half-marathon. Despite her slow pace, she proved that running is all about passion, spirit and dedication. Age is not a barrier.

A finisher was once a beginner. Those who just started running, don’t give up and keep moving. Your consistency will determine your future aims of finishing more runs within your targeted times.

Too all Malaysians, let’s run!
