Senior citizen found drowned, still in his wheelchair


PETALING JAYA: A senior citizen was found drowned while still in his wheelchair, about 5.5km from where he was believed to have fallen into Sungai Kampung Kuantan in Kuala Selangor.

The victim was discovered by members of the public near a jetty at Batu 7 at around 8.30am yesterday.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the department received an emergency call at 9.09pm on Friday.

“Search-and-rescue operations were immediately launched, involving personnel from the Bestari Jaya fire station, as well as the water rescue team and K9 unit.

“The victim was believed to have fallen into the river, and search efforts were carried out using surface search and diving techniques,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Ahmad Mukhlis added that operations continued into the second day, with divers conduc­ting underwater searches while K9 units and firefighters combed the riverbanks within a 1km radius.

“However, the victim was not located, and the operation was suspended at 6.30pm on Saturday before resuming the following morning.”

Ahmad Mukhlis said the victim’s body was eventually found by the public about 5.5km from where he was believed to have fallen.

“The remains were recovered by rescuers and handed over to the police for further action.”

Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a Form Two student who was reported missing while bathing in Sungai Pahang at Kampung Durian Hijau, Jerantut, on Friday was found drowned yesterday morning.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department assistant operations director Mohd Salahuddin Isa said Muhammad Amirul Ashraf Abdullah, 14, was found at 9.50am, about 3km from where he was reported missing.

“The victim’s body was recovered by members of the public and handed over to the police at 10.15am for further action,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Salahuddin said the search-and-rescue operation involved personnel from the Jerantut fire station and the Bukit Angin water rescue team, with assistance from the police, the Civil Defence Force and villagers.

It was reported on Saturday that the victim’s friend, Muhammad Danial Haikal Shamsudin, 14, was found drowned at 4.20pm, about 2km from where he was believed to have fallen.
