Any Russia-Ukraine peace deal needs EU involvement, Kallas says

WARSAW, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- European Union (EU) foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Friday that any peace deal between Ukraine and Russia would "require" the EU's involvement.

"We cannot say how and when Ukraine and Russia will strike a peace deal," Kallas told reporters after an informal meeting of foreign ministers from the Council of the Baltic Sea States in Warsaw. "Any agreement in order to be implemented will require the EU to be part of it," she said.

Kallas stressed there was "no way around the EU" on issues including security guarantees, sanctions, reconstruction and Ukraine's accession to the bloc.

She also said NATO and the EU had their respective roles in Europe's security architecture, adding that "we must make sure Ukraine is integrated into this architecture."
