Search underway for 59 missing after migrant boat sinks off Crete, Greece

ATHENS, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Greek authorities were searching waters off southeastern Crete on Thursday for 59 people missing after a survivor reported that a migrant boat carrying 60 people sank on Nov. 3, the Hellenic Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard said a 23-year-old Bangladeshi man was found on the islet of Chrysi, near the town of Ierapetra, on Wednesday and taken to a local hospital, according to the Coast Guard. He told authorities the vessel sank around midday on Nov. 3.

The search continued Thursday, but the Coast Guard said no one else had been found.

Greece, on the southeastern edge of Europe, remains a major entry point for migrants and refugees trying to reach the European Union by sea.
