16 years of Youth Olympic Games

DAKAR, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- From Singapore in 2010 to Dakar in 2026, the Summer Youth Olympic Games have evolved from a new Olympic initiative into a global sporting event that provides a platform for the next generation of athletes.

Launched by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Games made their debut in Singapore in 2010. Dakar 2026, the fourth edition, marks a historic milestone as the first Olympic sporting event to be held on African soil.

SINGAPORE, 2010: A NEW STAGE FOR YOUNG ATHLETES

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games were held in Singapore from Aug. 14 to 26, 2010, bringing together young athletes from around the world for a new Olympic experience.

The opening ceremony took place on a floating platform in Marina Bay, with the city's skyline providing a spectacular backdrop. On Aug. 15, Japan's Yuka Sato won the women's triathlon, becoming the first gold medalist in Youth Olympic history.

Singapore 2010 also introduced mixed-National Olympic Committee (NOC) events, in which athletes from different countries and regions competed on the same team. The Games also featured 3x3 basketball in international competition, a format that would later become an Olympic discipline. Saudi Arabia's Dalma Malhas made history as the first Saudi woman to compete in an Olympic event, winning bronze in individual show jumping.

NANJING, 2014: MORE SPORTS, MORE TO EXPLORE

Nanjing hosted the second edition of the Games from Aug. 16 to 28, 2014. A total of 3,579 athletes from 203 teams competed in 222 medal events.

The sports program expanded to include golf, which returned to the Olympic program for the first time since 1904, and rugby sevens. Beyond the main competition program, the Games also gave young people opportunities to explore other sports. At the Sports Lab, athletes and spectators could try activities such as skateboarding, sport climbing, roller sports and wushu.

Education was another key component of the Nanjing Games. Through the IOC's Culture and Education Program, Athlete Role Models shared their experiences with young competitors, while activities in the Youth Olympic Village covered topics including healthy eating, injury prevention, career planning and the dangers of doping.

BUENOS AIRES, 2018: A CITYWIDE CELEBRATION

The third edition was held in Buenos Aires from Oct. 6 to 18, 2018, attracting around 4,000 athletes. For the first time in Olympic history, the Games achieved equal participation by male and female athletes.

The Argentine capital gave the event a distinctly urban character. Rather than holding the opening ceremony in a traditional stadium, organizers transformed it into a street celebration. Competitions and activities were spread across four areas of the city, while free public access helped attract more than one million spectators.

The Games also reached audiences far beyond Buenos Aires through extensive online coverage, generating millions of users and video views and bringing the competition to young sports fans around the world.

DAKAR, 2026: A FIRST FOR AFRICA

For the first time, an Olympic sporting event is being held on African soil, with Dakar 2026 taking place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 13. The Games mark a milestone for both the Olympic Movement and the African continent.

Around 2,700 athletes aged 14 to 17 are expected to compete in 25 sports and 153 medal events. Competitions are spread across three host areas - Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly - with a program that brings together sport, education, culture and youth development.

African participation and representation are central to the event. The motto, "Africa Welcomes, Dakar Celebrates," reflects the organizers' ambition to make the Games a meeting place for young people and cultures while showcasing the continent's sporting talent.

Dakar 2026 is also expected to offer 25 percent more live coverage of sports featured at both the Buenos Aires and Dakar editions, extending the event's reach to audiences around the world.

From Singapore to Nanjing and Buenos Aires, and now Dakar, the Summer Youth Olympic Games have continued to evolve. Over 16 years, they have offered young athletes not only a chance to compete on the international stage, but also opportunities to learn from one another and experience the broader values of sport.
