Forlan names provisional Uruguay squad for friendlies

MONTEVIDEO, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Uncapped defender Federico Pereira has been included in a preliminary Uruguay squad for friendlies against Argentina and the Dominican Republic, the Uruguayan Football Association said on Friday.

The 26-year-old was rewarded for his performances with Mexico's Toluca, whom he joined from Liverpool Montevideo in January 2024.

As expected, the 42-man squad includes Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, Liverpool defender Ronald Araujo and Flamengo playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

Uruguay will face Argentina at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires on Nov. 13 before hosting the Dominican Republic on a date and at a venue that are still to be confirmed.

The matches continue a rebuilding phase under manager Diego Forlan, who replaced Marcelo Bielsa in August after the Celeste's failure to reach the knockout stage at the FIFA World Cup.
