LISBON, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Portugal has approved a new 10-year tourism strategy targeting 50 million non-resident tourists and revenues of more than 53 billion euros (59.36 billion U.S. dollars) by 2035, state secretary for tourism Pedro Machado announced Thursday.
The Estrategia Turismo 2035, which succeeds the previous Tourism Strategy 2027, is based on projections from the World Tourism Organization and aims to continue growing the sector's contribution to the economy.
"Our great ambition is, fundamentally, to continue growing in gross value added," Machado said, adding that the strategy also seeks to generate greater development, growth and wealth distribution across the territory.
Portugal is expected to close 2026 with more than 30 million international tourists and more than 30 billion euros (33.6 billion dollars) in tourism revenues, the state secretary said.
Portugal received 29.9 million tourists in 2025, a 3.3 percent increase from the previous year, generating revenues that exceeded 5.1 billion euros (5.71 billion dollars) in the first quarter of 2026.
