MADRID, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- A major weather change has caused heavy rainfall in large areas of northeastern and eastern Spain, causing one death over the weekend.
Rescuers recovered the body of a woman on Sunday after she was swept away by floodwaters in Cabrera de Mar, north of Barcelona, on Saturday.
"We have located the body of the woman we had been searching for since last night in Cabrera de Mar. We found her near the breakwater at the port of Premia de Mar," the Catalan fire service said on social media X.
The woman was swept away on Saturday evening while she was with her husband and two children near the town's municipal pavilion, close to a stream.
The incident came as torrential rain associated with Dana Adam, an isolated depression at upper atmospheric levels that can cause some of Spain's heaviest autumn rainfall, battered the area.
Spain's state meteorological agency, Aemet, issued red alerts for parts of Valencia and Alicante, warning that rainfall could exceed 300 litres per square metre in 24 hours in some places.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also posted a message on X, saying: "We are keeping a close eye on the situation in various parts of Spain affected by Dana Adam. Take great care and follow the instructions of emergency services."
The storm also disrupted air traffic at Ibiza Airport, located on the island of Ibiza in Spain's Balearic Islands. Flights were diverted and cancelled, while several municipalities in Valencia province announced suspension of classes on Monday.
