2 arrested for deadly attack at middle school in north Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Authorities arrested two 18-year-old brothers for a deadly attack Thursday that left one person dead and three others injured at their former middle school in Torreon, a city in northern Mexico's Coahuila state.

Federico Fernandez, the state's attorney general, told local media the two suspects entered Secondary School Number 13 in the city's La Union area and attacked administrative staff and students, reportedly with knives.

The school's deputy director died from her wounds and the three people injured received medical attention, Mexico's Security Cabinet said in a statement on X.

Preliminary reports indicate the young men were driven by ill "feelings toward the school," said Fernandez, adding authorities are still investigating to determine the circumstances and motive of the attack.

Coahuila Governor Manolo Jimenez told reporters the full weight of the law will be applied against the suspects. The Security Cabinet expressed its condolences to the relatives of the victim and its solidarity with the educational community, saying federal institutions will continue to coordinate with state and local officials to follow up on the case.
