TUNIS, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia on Wednesday stressed the strategic importance of accelerating its energy transition and expanding renewable energy to strengthen energy security, industrial competitiveness and investment.
State Secretary for Energy Transition Wael Chouchane made the remarks while opening the second edition of the Africa Energy Forum 2026 in Tunis, held under the theme "Leadership and Cooperation for a Secure and Sustainable Future."
Chouchane said that hydrocarbons continue to play an important role in maintaining energy balance, while renewable energy offers significant opportunities to diversify supply, enhance energy independence and improve the competitiveness of electricity generation over the medium and long term.
Tunisia is pursuing a gradual transformation of its energy system in response to its energy deficit, focusing on renewable energy development, improved energy efficiency and demand management, he said.
Several solar power plants have entered service in the country in recent years, while new solar and wind power projects are being developed with public and private investment, according to Chouchane.
