TBILISI, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Georgia and Naoero have established diplomatic relations, as Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Naoero President David Adeang signed the relevant protocol in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, according to the Georgian government.
Kobakhidze thanked Adeang for Naoero's decision to revoke diplomatic recognition of Georgia's breakaway regions, saying the move reaffirmed that respect for international law underpins stable and responsible international relations.
Following the meeting, Kobakhidze said on X Monday that the signing of the protocol opened "a new chapter" of cooperation between Georgia and Naoero and expressed hope that the partnership would deepen in the coming years.
On July 21, 2026, Naoero's government decided to terminate diplomatic relations with Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Georgia's Foreign Ministry later welcomed the decision and expressed readiness to establish diplomatic relations with Naoero and develop bilateral cooperation on the basis of shared interests.
