Dutch goods exports to U.S. fall 25 pct in first half of 2026 amid higher U.S. tariffs

THE HAGUE, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The value of Dutch goods exports to the United States fell by 25 percent in the first half of 2026 from a year earlier, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) said Thursday.

"The decline continues a downward trend that began in the second half of 2025. Since August 2025, a general import tariff of 15 percent has been imposed by the United States on goods from the European Union," CBS said in a press release.

According to CBS, the Netherlands exported goods worth 13.0 billion euros (15.1 billion U.S. dollars) to the United States in the first half of 2026, down 4.3 billion euros (5.0 billion U.S. dollars) from a year earlier.

In contrast, the value of Dutch imports from the United States rose 19.0 percent to 27.6 billion euros (32.1 billion U.S. dollars). Three-quarters of the increase was attributable to mineral fuels. Excluding mineral fuels, the growth rate was 6.7 percent.

CBS economist Marjolijn Jaarsma told Dutch media outlet NU.nl that the United States is a major energy supplier to the Netherlands and that the Netherlands has become more dependent on imports since it stopped extracting gas from the Groningen gas field a few years ago.
