LOS ANGELES, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Hurricane Lowell continued to bring strong winds and heavy rain to parts of Hawaii on Tuesday, with hurricane conditions persisting in Kauai County and tropical storm conditions affecting Oahu, according to the latest updates from the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS).
In Kauai County, hurricane conditions were expected to continue for several more hours, with the strongest winds occurring atop mountains and along windward and leeward slopes, the NWS said.
The NWS warned that periods of heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Lowell would continue across the Hawaiian Islands through Wednesday, potentially triggering significant flash flooding and mudslides, particularly in Kauai County and portions of the Big Island.
On Oahu, tropical storm conditions were expected to continue. Strong wind gusts could bring down trees and cause power outages, especially in higher-terrain areas, according to the NWS.
The weather agency also warned that large waves would continue to produce life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along exposed coasts of the Hawaiian Islands during the next few days.
The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said conditions remained highly hazardous in Kauai County and on Oahu, with several thousand customers reporting power outages.
The City and County of Honolulu urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel as Hurricane Lowell continued to move past the Hawaiian Islands.
