TBILISI, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Georgia's foreign exchange reserves reached a record 8.14 billion U.S. dollars in August, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said Tuesday.
The reserves increased 56.4 percent year on year and rose by 613 million dollars from the previous month, Kobakhidze said at a government meeting.
He added that the country's foreign exchange reserves had doubled in less than two years compared with their level in October 2024.
Amid favorable conditions in the foreign exchange market, the National Bank of Georgia made net foreign exchange purchases totaling more than 2.5 billion dollars in the January-July period, said Kobakhidze.
He also highlighted efforts to diversify the country's reserves, noting that the National Bank made its first investment in gold in 2024.
The central bank purchased 100 million dollars worth of monetary gold in 2026, with gold accounting for more than 14 percent of the country's total reserves, according to Kobakhidze.
