5 Lebanese, Syrian nationals arrested over alleged smuggling of fighters into Lebanon, Hezbollah denies links

BEIRUT, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon's Internal Security Forces' Information Branch arrested five Lebanese and Syrian nationals on Wednesday for allegedly being involved in bringing individuals from Syria across the northern border into Lebanon and transporting them to the Bekaa Valley for military training, the National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The suspects are being interrogated under the supervision of Public Prosecutor at the Court of Cassation Ahmad Rami el-Hajj, who has ordered an expanded investigation into the network.

Security forces seized machine guns, sniper rifles, and explosives from the group and are tracking down several other people whose names emerged during the investigation, NNA added.

The case will be referred to the military judiciary after the preliminary investigation is completed.

In response to media reports alleging that the group was part of a cell seeking to destabilize security in Lebanon and Syria, Hezbollah issued a statement "categorically" denying any relationship with the arrested group.
