Tunisia places most regions on high alert amid heatwave

TUNIS, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia's National Institute of Meteorology (INM) on Wednesday placed all regions except the western province of Kasserine on high alert for Wednesday and Thursday due to a heatwave accompanied by sirocco winds.

Temperatures are expected to remain particularly high, with localized thunderstorms and rainfall possible in some areas during the afternoon, according to the INM's weather alert map.

The institute warned that children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses or mental health conditions, those on regular medication, and those living alone are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.

The INM advised residents to drink water regularly throughout the day, even when they do not feel thirsty, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak hours, particularly between noon and 4 p.m., protect their heads from direct sunlight if outdoors, and reduce strenuous physical activity.
