AMMAN, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Ministry of Agriculture and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on Wednesday signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen farmers' capacity to adapt to climate change through training programs and water-efficient agricultural technologies.
According to a ministry statement, the agreement was signed by Jordanian Minister of Agriculture Saeb Abdel Haleem Mufleh Khreisat and FAO Acting Representative in Jordan Paul Opio.
The agreement is part of the "Building Resilience to Cope with Climate Change in Jordan through Improving Water Use Efficiency in the Agriculture Sector (BRCCJ)" project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented by the FAO in partnership with Jordanian ministries and the UN Development Programme.
Under the agreement, 44 farmer field schools and 44 field days will be organized in the governorates of Madaba, Karak, Tafilah and Ma'an, south of Amman. The activities are expected to benefit 880 farmers with practical knowledge on climate-smart agriculture and water-use efficiency.
The BRCCJ project, the first GCF-funded project in Jordan, is being implemented over seven years with a total value of 33.25 million U.S. dollars.
