"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" tops North American box office for 4th weekend


LOS ANGELES, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sony and Marvel's superhero film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" led North American box office charts for the fourth weekend in a row with an estimated 39 million U.S. dollars, according to data released by measurement firm Rentrak on Sunday.

The film, based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man and starring Tom Holland as the titular hero, has grossed 854.9 million dollars in North America and 2.22 billion dollars worldwide. It currently stands as the world's sixth-highest-grossing film of all time.

Sony's horror film "Insidious: Out of the Further" opened in second place with 25.3 million dollars. The sixth installment in the Insidious franchise was directed by Jacob Chase and stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson-Sellers among others.

Rounding out the top three, Universal Pictures' epic action film "The Odyssey" took in 19.5 million dollars in its sixth weekend. The film now has a domestic cume of 539 million dollars and a global cume of 1.44 billion dollars through Sunday.
