LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Sony and Marvel's superhero film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" led North American box office charts for the third weekend in a row with an estimated 70 million U.S. dollars, according to data released by measurement firm Rentrak on Sunday.
The film, based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man and starring Tom Holland as the titular hero, has grossed 785.8 million dollars in North America and 2.022 billion dollars worldwide, making it Sony's highest-grossing release ever, ahead of 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home."
Universal Pictures' epic action film "The Odyssey" came in second with 23.2 million dollars in its fifth weekend. The film, directed by Christopher Nolan, now has a domestic cume of 504.68 million dollars and a global cume of 1.29 billion dollars through Sunday.
Rounding out the top three, Warner Bros.' science fiction thriller "The End of Oak Street" opened in third place with 21 million dollars.
