TASHKENT, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan will become a full member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) starting Jan. 1, 2027, the Ministry of Digital Technologies of Uzbekistan said Thursday following a meeting between Minister Sherzod Shermatov and IEC Secretary-General Philippe Metzger.
Full membership will allow Uzbekistan to participate directly in developing and revising international standards through IEC technical committees.
Cooperation between Uzbekistan and the IEC began in 2015 under the Affiliate Country Programme, before the country was granted associate member status in 2023.
Out of more than 11,000 IEC international standards, Uzbekistan has adopted nearly 2,000 to date. Both sides noted potential for further cooperation in information technology, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, electrical engineering, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation on training national specialists and developing conformity assessment systems.
Founded in 1906, the IEC develops international standards for electrical, electronic and related technologies, bringing together around 170 members, 64 of which hold full membership status.
