NIAMEY, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 21 people were killed and 37 others injured in a collision between two passenger buses on Friday in western Niger, the Niger News Agency (ANP) reported Saturday.
The crash occurred on the Maradi-Madaoua road, about 55 km from the city of Madaoua, according to the ANP.
The provisional death toll was 21, while the 37 injured people were receiving medical treatment, the agency reported, adding that one of the buses was carrying military personnel.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
The accident occurred as Nigerien authorities were stepping up road safety awareness campaigns amid frequent road accidents in the country.
Road accidents are common in Niger, with speeding, drunk driving, poor vehicle and road conditions among the main factors.
According to a report by the Nigerien Road Safety Agency cited by the ANP, more than 7,100 road accidents were recorded in Niger in 2025, killing more than 1,200 people and seriously injuring more than 4,400 others.
