SAO PAULO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- A storm accompanied by a tornado left one person dead, five injured and more than 2,300 people displaced in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, the state Civil Defense agency said Friday.
The death occurred in the municipality of Montenegro, where the person was killed by a falling tree.
In total, the storm damaged homes, public buildings, schools and power networks in 114 municipalities. Wind gusts exceeded 130 km per hour in some areas.
The National Institute of Meteorology issued yellow, orange and red alerts for parts of southern and southeastern Brazil, with strong winds expected in other states, including Santa Catarina, Parana, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
