LOS ANGELES, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Sony and Marvel's superhero film "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" took the top spot at the North American box office during its opening weekend with an estimated 355 million U.S. dollars, according to data released by measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.
The debut ranks as the second-largest domestic opening in Hollywood history, trailing only Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame," which opened to 357 million dollars in 2019.
Internationally, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" brought in 572 million dollars during its opening weekend. Combined with its North American performance, the film's worldwide opening reached 927 million dollars, making it the second best global debut of all time.
The film has received an approval rating of 90 percent based on 320 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore.
Universal Pictures' epic action film "The Odyssey" slipped to second place in its third weekend, earning 51 million dollars. Directed by Christopher Nolan and based on Homer's ancient Greek epic poem, the film has grossed 395.5 million dollars in North America and 911.4 million dollars worldwide.
Disney and Pixar's animated film "Toy Story 5" landed in third place with 6.3 million dollars in its seventh weekend. The film has earned a domestic cume of 461.7 million dollars and a global total of 1.066 billion dollars.
