LOS ANGELES, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The recent massive outbreak of cyclosporiasis that began on June 22 in the United States has expanded to nine states, with four new states reporting confirmed cases, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Friday.
"Since the last update on July 18, 2026, additional confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis related to this multistate outbreak have been reported, and the total case count associated with this multistate outbreak is now 1,947. This includes the addition of 4 states: Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania," the CDC said in an update on its website.
"Epidemiologic and traceback data continue to show that iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico was contaminated with Cyclospora and has made people sick," the CDC said, adding that state and local public health officials are interviewing people about the foods they ate in the two weeks before they became ill.
The earliest illnesses linked to this outbreak began on June 22, and the most recent illness onset date is July 20.
So far there have been at least 98 hospitalizations, and no deaths have been reported, the center said, adding that the true number of sick people in this multistate outbreak is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses.
The CDC reported earlier this week that between May 1 and July 20, it received reports of 4,173 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis across 41 states. In addition, more than 7,400 suspected cases had not yet been laboratory confirmed and remained under investigation.
