ADDIS ABABA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government has lauded recent key improvements in the country's agricultural sector, citing enhanced agricultural productivity and the sector's growing contribution to export earnings.
The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture, in a statement issued Sunday, said the country successfully cultivated 29 million hectares of land and harvested 130 million tonnes of produce during the 2025/26 Ethiopian fiscal year, which ended on July 7.
Data from the ministry showed that Ethiopia generated a record 4.55 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from agricultural exports during the recently concluded fiscal year.
Coffee exports accounted for the largest share of the country's overall revenue from agricultural exports during the reported period, amounting to 3.1 billion U.S. dollars.
Meanwhile, the ministry hailed successes in mobilizing tens of millions of citizens for the successful implementation of the flagship Green Legacy Initiative, which saw the planting of tens of billions of trees since 2018.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed recently announced the country's ambition to plant more than 8 billion new seedlings during the ongoing rainy season, as part of this year's edition of the national reforestation drive.
