Venezuela says 12,806 displaced people housed in shelters after quakes

CARACAS, July 6 (Xinhua) -- A total of 12,806 displaced people have so far been housed in shelters or temporary camps in Venezuela after the powerful earthquakes that struck on June 24, Venezuelan Education Minister Hector Rodriguez said Monday.

The temporary camps were set up by Venezuelan authorities to shelter and assist families affected by the magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 earthquakes.

Rodriguez said on Telegram that 80 camps have been set up so far, including 37 in Caracas, 22 in Miranda state and 21 in La Guaira, the hardest-hit area in Venezuela's north-central region.

The temporary camps have an installed capacity to accommodate 17,642 people, though those in La Guaira are still being expanded.

The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen to at least 3,342, with 16,740 people injured and 17,345 left homeless, according to the latest official update released Sunday.
