9 children killed as motorized tricycle falls into canal in S. Egypt

CAIRO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- A motorized tricycle fell into a canal in Egypt's southern governorate of Asyut on Tuesday, killing at least nine children and injuring two others aboard, local authorities said.

The accident occurred in the Abu Tig district, according to a statement from the Asyut governorate.

Governor Mohamed Alwan visited the site to oversee search-and-rescue efforts and coordinate among executive, security, and rescue authorities, it said.

Alwan said that the governorate was mobilizing all available resources to respond to the tragedy, stressing that protecting citizens' lives and safety was a top priority.

He also ordered the installation of concrete barriers and other protective measures along both sides of the canal, in coordination with the water resources and irrigation authorities, to enhance safety and prevent similar accidents.

The governorate confirmed the initial death toll of nine, with two injuries, as authorities continued field procedures related to the accident.
