2 dead in shooting incident in northern BiH

SARAJEVO, June 21 (Xinhua) -- Two people died following a shooting incident in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday evening, local police said.

Tuzla Canton police said officers responding to a report of gunfire near Gracanica municipality, found a 68-year-old woman dead at the scene, while a 68-year-old man died while being transported to hospital.

Local police said the cantonal prosecutor would oversee the investigation. Investigators from the criminal police sector of the Tuzla Canton Interior Ministry are carrying out on-site and other investigative measures to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Local media, citing unofficial information, reported that the man allegedly shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities have not officially confirmed the circumstances. More information is expected after the investigation is completed.

Domestic violence and femicide have remained a serious concern in Bosnia and Herzegovina in recent years. The OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina said in May that violence against women, including its most extreme form, femicide, continues to pose a persistent threat, calling for stronger preventive mechanisms and more effective protection measures.
