MAPUTO, June 15 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican investigation authorities have seized 3.7 tonnes of synthetic drugs disguised as supplements at Maputo International Airport, local daily Noticias reported on Monday.
According to the report, it is one of the largest drug seizures carried out by the country's investigation authorities, following the interception of 1.5 tonnes of cocaine disguised as candy in 2024.
Two suspects, one Mozambican and one Nigerian, were arrested in connection with the case. Both denied involvement, saying they had been asked to transport the cargo and had been told it contained supplements.
Investigators said laboratory tests confirmed the cargo contained synthetic drugs composed of fentanyl.
"Investigators had initially received information suggesting the shipment came from Brazil, but further inquiries showed it was dispatched from India to Maputo via Doha and arrived in the Mozambican capital on June 7," Hilario Lole, spokesperson for the investigation authorities, was quoted as saying.
Authorities described the seizure as a major step in the fight against drug trafficking, particularly against fentanyl, which they said is more potent and harmful than drugs such as cocaine, heroin and morphine.
