Ukraine, Baltic countries deepen drone cooperation amid airspace concerns

TALLINN, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine moved to deepen drone cooperation with Estonia and Latvia on Tuesday during President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Tallinn for a summit of Nordic and Baltic leaders, as recent drone incursions raised concerns over regional airspace security.

Speaking at a press conference, Zelensky said Ukraine was ready to work with European partners on drone cooperation, according to Estonian public broadcaster ERR.

In a post on the social platform X, Zelensky said he and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal had signed a joint declaration on enhanced security and defense cooperation, including the exchange of experience, defense-industrial cooperation, and air defense.

Moreover, Zelensky and Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs signed a defense cooperation agreement on Tuesday to strengthen Latvia's counter-drone capabilities, according to Latvian public broadcaster LSM.

"We agreed that the armed forces of the two countries will work closely together in implementing it, as sharing knowledge, experience, and resources will allow us to be much more effective in strengthening our national defense," Kulbergs was quoted as saying after the signing event.

On Monday, a foreign drone that entered Latvian airspace was shot down by French fighter jets serving in NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission. This was the first downing of an unmanned aerial vehicle detected in Latvian airspace.
