4 killed, 24 injured in Nigeria train derailment

ABUJA, June 9 (Xinhua) -- At least four people were killed and 24 others injured after a passenger train derailed in Nigeria's southern Delta region, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Funsho Adebiyi, permanent secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, said at a press briefing in Abuja that a total of 482 people, including 442 passengers and 40 crew members, were on board the Warri-Itakpe train when the accident occurred near Agbor in Delta State on Monday.

Preliminary findings showed that four coaches overturned and one coach derailed in the incident.

Adebiyi said rescue operations were launched immediately after the accident and have since been completed, and authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident.
