U.S. measles cases exceed 2,000 for 2nd consecutive year

LOS ANGELES, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Measles cases in the United States have surpassed 2,000 for the second consecutive year, according to data released Friday by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In a news release, the CDC said that 2,030 confirmed measles cases had been reported nationwide so far this year.

The agency reported 30 new outbreaks in 2026, with 93 percent of all confirmed cases linked to outbreaks. About 72 percent of cases have occurred among individuals under the age of 20.

The hospitalization rate stood at about 6 percent in 2026, down from 11 percent in 2025.

Last year, the United States recorded a total of 2,288 confirmed measles cases, the highest annual tally since measles was declared eliminated in the country in 2000 and the largest number of cases reported in more than three decades.
