LISBON, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Portugal has recorded its highest temperature ever for the month of May as a heatwave continues to affect regions south of the Tagus River, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said on Thursday.
The town of Mora, in southern Portugal, reached 40.3 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, surpassing the previous national May record of 40 degrees Celsius registered in Pinhao on May 30, 1953, and in Termas de Monfortinho during the final two days of May 2001.
The heatwave began on May 20 and has been particularly concentrated in the Alentejo region and the Tagus Valley, IPMA said.
The institute warned that more locations, especially in northern and inland central regions, are likely to enter heatwave conditions in the coming days, and there is a strong probability that the ongoing heatwave will continue into the first days of June.
