Uzbekistan to expand, modernize Tashkent metro system

TASHKENT, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The Uzbek government has approved a comprehensive set of proposals to expand and modernize the Tashkent metro system to meet growing urban demands, according to the press service of the president of Uzbekistan.

The plan sets a target to increase the Tashkent metro's daily passenger traffic to 1.8 million people by 2030. The expansion will include growing the network to 79 stations and extending the total track length to 103 km, the press service said Wednesday in a release.

Under the proposals, efforts will be directed toward modernizing the technical base and improving service quality across the existing infrastructure, with measures aimed at reducing train intervals to between 1.5 and 3 minutes.

A long-term development strategy for 2027-2035 has also been formulated, which aims to double the network's scale and increase passenger capacity by 2.5 times compared with current levels.

The strategy focuses on building an environmentally sustainable, energy-efficient and safe transport system while further enhancing service quality and passenger comfort.
