United Airlines to resume direct flights between U.S., Venezuela

CARACAS, May 12 (Xinhua) -- U.S. carrier United Airlines announced Tuesday that it plans to resume direct flights between the United States and Venezuela starting Aug. 11, marking its return to the route after nearly a decade.

The airline said it will operate daily nonstop flights between Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Caracas' Simon Bolivar International Airport using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. Tickets are already on sale, with service subject to government approval.

This flight reopens a key economic gateway, creates new business opportunities and makes it easier for families to reconnect with loved ones, said United Airlines in a statement.

United Airlines' planned return follows American Airlines' resumption of direct commercial passenger flights to Venezuela on April 30, the first such U.S. service after years of suspension.

United Airlines suspended its Venezuela service in 2017 amid political tensions between Washington and Caracas.
