YAOUNDE, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Chad announced on Monday the deployment of a contingent of 1,500 security personnel to Haiti as part of an international effort to support local authorities in tackling armed gangs.
The announcement was made during a special plenary session of the country's parliament.
In a message to lawmakers read by Ali Kolotou Tchaimi, president of the National Assembly, Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno said the country was committed to international stability.
"Chad has a high regard for peace and security in the development of a nation. Chad's commitment is part of international solidarity and assistance to a brotherly country whose existence is threatened," Mahamat said.
The mission, scheduled to last 12 months from April, aims to support Haitian authorities in the face of violence perpetrated by armed gangs, described by the Chadian leader as "lawless and faithless."
The deployment forms part of the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force, which aims to restore stability in the Caribbean nation.
