LAUSD reaches tentative labor agreement with teachers union ahead of planned strike

LOS ANGELES, April 12 (Xinhua) -- The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) announced Sunday that it reached a tentative labor agreement with United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA), just days ahead of a planned Tuesday strike.

The school district said in a statement that the tentative two-year agreement with UTLA would increase union members' salary scales by 11.65 percent and increase the beginning teacher salary to 77,000 U.S. dollars per year.

"We will continue to meet with our remaining labor partners throughout the weekend with the intent to reach additional agreements that would allow us to keep schools open on Tuesday, April 14," the district said.

LAUSD, the second largest public school district in the United States, enrolls more than 520,000 students, according to the school district's website.

"Early this morning, UTLA's 150-member Bargaining Team reached a tentative two-year agreement with the district with big wins that the team enthusiastically recommends to UTLA members for ratification," said the teachers union, which represents more than 38,000 educators employed by LAUSD, in a Facebook post.

However, local news outlets reported that the deal does not completely rule out the possibility of a strike from other educators and school workers.
