EAC inflation eases in late 2025 despite high annual average

DAR ES SALAAM, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Inflationary pressures in the East African Community (EAC) eased toward the end of 2025, according to a statement issued by the regional bloc on Thursday.

The EAC said that annual headline inflation declined to 13.3 percent in December 2025 from 15.2 percent in November, a sharp drop compared with the 27.1 percent recorded in December 2024.

Despite the easing trend toward the year-end, the annual average inflation rate for 2025 rose to 22.9 percent from 13.6 percent in 2024, largely driven by elevated inflation levels in South Sudan and Burundi, the statement said.

According to the statement, core inflation, which excludes food and energy prices, also declined to 9.6 percent in December 2025 from 12.0 percent in the previous month.

Food inflation eased to 18.5 percent, while inflation in energy, fuel, and utilities stood at 9.5 percent, the statement said.

The EAC member states are Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
