Uzbekistan's EV import volume surges in Q1

TASHKENT, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan imported 16,363 electric vehicles (EVs), costing a total of 230.8 million U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2026, a surge of 514 percent in volume and 637 percent in value year on year, according to the country's Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The rapid growth in the import value of the EV segment, whose share in total passenger car imports exceeded 62 percent, has become a key driver in transforming the country's automotive import structure, said the Customs Committee under the ministry on Monday.

During the same period, the total value of all passenger cars imported reached 369.8 million dollars, up 220.5 percent compared to the first quarter of last year.

The hybrid vehicle segment showed even higher growth momentum, with a total of 1,856 cars imported, worth 59.3 million dollars, up from the 95 units valued at 2.9 million dollars recorded in the same period of 2025.

Industry experts attribute the trend to the government's ongoing efforts to promote green energy and the expansion of charging infrastructure across the Central Asian nation.
