"Project Hail Mary" dominates North American box office in opening weekend

LOS ANGELES, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Amazon MGM Studio's science fiction film "Project Hail Mary" dominated the North American box office in its opening weekend with 80.6 million U.S. dollars, marking the biggest debut so far in 2026, data from measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and starring Ryan Gosling, the film follows a science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out.

The well-reviewed film holds an approval rating of 95 percent based on 293 reviews to date on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an "A" on an "A+" to "F" scale from audiences polled by market research firm CinemaScore.

Disney and Pixar's animated film "Hoppers" fell to second place, earning 18 million dollars in its third weekend. The film has grossed 120.4 million dollars in North America and 242.6 million dollars worldwide.

Rounding out the top three, Moviegoers Entertainment's Indian spy action thriller "Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge" brought in an estimated 10.1 million dollars through Sunday.
