NEW YORK, March 12 (Xinhua) -- A synagogue in the U.S. state of Michigan was attacked and the suspect has been killed, local media reported Thursday.

Law enforcement agencies from across metropolitan Detroit responded to reports of an active shooter at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield in Detroit's northwest suburbs. The attack happened around 12:30 p.m. local time, police reported.

In a brief update to the media, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said there had been no confirmed injuries.

Preliminary investigation found that the suspect came to the temple and engaged in a gunfight with the security of the temple. "We're not getting any active stimulus at the moment," Bouchard said, adding that investigators are looking into whether anyone else was involved.

Police have issued a shelter-in-place for a one-mile (around 1.6 km) radius from the temple as they continue to investigate, and patrols have been increased at other places of worship in the district.

A video of the scene issued by local media shows a massive police response and black smoke coming out of a part of the synagogue.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit posted on social media after the attack, saying that their Jewish agencies were in precautionary lockdown protocol. Later, the federation said that "all other Jewish organizations are no longer required to be in lockdown or lockout protocol."
