Chinese investments crucial to Hungary's economy: Hungarian FM

KAPUVAR, Hungary, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese investments play an important role in the strong performance of the Hungarian economy despite global uncertainties, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said on Thursday.

Szijjarto made the remarks at the inauguration ceremony of the second phase of Chinese technology company Intretech's manufacturing facility in Kapuvar, western Hungary, where the company also announced a further expansion of its operations.

"Chinese companies bring the most modern technologies to Hungary and create reliable jobs that provide secure livelihoods," he said, adding that Hungary views cooperation between Eastern and Western economies as a natural part of global economic development.

He also said that the Hungarian government supports the company's ongoing 25 billion forint (about 74 million U.S. dollars) investment program, which is expected to create 330 new jobs and significantly expand the production area at the Kapuvar site.

Chinese Ambassador to Hungary Gong Tao said at the event that by bringing advanced manufacturing technologies and research and development capabilities to the local market, the company has contributed to Hungary's industrial upgrading and job creation.

He added that China-Hungary relations have maintained high-level development in recent years, with economic cooperation becoming an important pillar of bilateral ties. In 2025, China became Hungary's largest source of foreign investment for the third consecutive year, accounting for 57 percent of total foreign direct investment inflows, while bilateral trade reached 20.8 billion U.S. dollars.

Wei Zifeng, general manager of Intretech Hungary, said the expansion marks a key milestone in the company's European growth strategy.

According to Wei, the new facilities will focus on manufacturing products related to "renewable energy, electric mobility and sustainable packaging," and will also include a research and development center.

Mayor Laszlo Horvath said the company's investments have contributed significantly to the economic development of the Kapuvar region and created stable employment opportunities for local residents.
